Chapter Twenty-Nine

Rhoswen peered out the entrance of Brynn’s former cell, making sure the corridor was clear before stepping out. She was careful to keep to the shadows until she was well away from the cell area.

After her conversation with Brynn, Taren, Leith, and Ewan, she was reassured of their continued support, especially after hearing their reaction when discovering Fenora was missing and subsequently finding she was in Fae. They were genuinely distressed by Fenora’s dishonesty and learning about the dark magic that she had found, and Rhoswen couldn’t help but think they were feeling as confused as she was.

Adding to the somber mood was the fact she now needed to tell Nighean what she’d learned. Nighean would be heartbroken she knew, thinking her dream of returning home or being with Leith would not happen. She hoped the rest of what she would show her would provide hope.

Rhoswen made her way to the tunnels connecting her chamber with Nighean’s. She pressed her ear to the entrance of Nighean’s room, listening for anyone other than Nighean. When she didn’t hear any other presence, she cautiously peered inside. She found Nighean sitting in a chair, hand outstretched with a ball of fire floating above her palm.

“Nighean?” Rhoswen called before stepping in.

“Aye.” The fireball disappeared as Nighean stood.

“I have much news.” Rhoswen came over to Nighean.

“What?”

“Not what. Who.”

“Who?” Nighean asked.

“We’ve been told to stay in our quarters because Amae’n is with someone.”

“Aye? He is always with someone.”

“No. This someone is Fenora.”

“What?” Nighean nearly collapsed at the mention of Fenora’s name.

“Come.” Rhoswen led Nighean back over to where she had been sitting. “You had the same reaction I did.”

“How can this be? Fenora?” Nighean could barely choke out the words. “I donnae understand.” She shook her head.

“On Beltane morning I saw her with Amae’n. She looked sad and I wondered if he had kidnapped or tricked her. I didn’t say anything because I wanted to talk to her at our next meeting time. She did not show. So again today, I went to the cell area to try and talk with someone, but before I did, I walked around the palace just to see if I noticed anything unusual. I saw her again with Amae’n. This time she didn’t look as sad. As a matter of fact, she was smiling.”

“Oh nae.” Nighean closed her eyes and again shook her head. “This cannae be good.”

“I was able to speak with Brynn and the others. They were near frantic in a search for Fenora. They knew nothing of her whereabouts.”

“Fenora is acting of her own accord?” Nighean asked.

“Apparently. They were shocked when I told them she was here, in Fae.”

“And they ken nothing?”

“No. They were honestly stunned by the news.”

“What are we to do?”

“I don’t know, Nighean. I honestly don’t know if she’s told him about us, or Kairgon or any of it. She didn’t tell them about your witch mother. That I know.”

“Do ya think we can still trust her?”

Rhoswen shrugged. “I think we can still trust Brynn and the others.
